Emergency Medical Dispatch
The CCC is one of the few emergency dispatch centers in the area that works with an Emergency Medical Dispatch system. All Canfield dispatchers are sent to school to become certified as Emergency Medical Dispatchers, which means that all of the dispatchers can provide medical instructions over the phone. Dispatchers can instruct callers how to provide a wide range of medical assistance; from performing CPR, performing the Heimlich maneuver, how to help a seizure patient, or how to deliver a baby, to managing some of the more minor medical problems, such as nosebleeds, cuts, or minor burns. Each dispatcher must complete 24-hours of continuing education biannually to maintain their emergency medical dispatch certification. In addition, every emergency medical call is evaluated by a dispatcher certified in quality assurance, which insures that all dispatchers are providing the proper medical instructions and also helps dispatchers to improve their medical call-taking skills.
Emergency Medical Dispatch is a very valuable resource to the community of Canfield. Residents can take comfort in knowing that medical assistance is available to them during those critical minutes before a paramedic arrives on the scene of a medical emergency.
