As more and more families are purchasing computers to join the cyber community, the Canfield Police Department is also making strides to remain current with the latest technologies. With computer equipment now in use by administration, patrol and detective units of the police department, our officers will soon be able to write reports in the cruisers and access information at hand. Canfield Police Department reminds citizens that it can be a dangerous place.
Dangers:
Credit card fraud
Stalking
Theft
Virus infection
Spamming
Hacking
Denial of service
Here are a few tips for parents:
Set rules for internet use.
Stay involved with your child’s use.
Select screen names without using your name or address.
Educate children of the dangers.
Teach Netiquette– Proper use of the internet.
Use a program like Net-Nanny or Cyber Patrol to protect your child.
Place your computer in a room that is frequently used.
Monitor time spent on-line, excessive time could mean trouble.
Watch for signs of withdrawal or unexplained long distance phone bills or gifts received by mail.
Share on-line time with them and become familiar with the people your child talks to on-line.
Kids look here! for a few tips:
Do not give your name, address, or telephone number to anyone.
Never give your password or download a file from an email that you are not sure who it is from.
If there is any degree of emotional involvement, let your parents or someone else know.
Never agree to meet anyone, unless they are willing to come to your home and meet your parents.
Understand that the internet can let people appear nice but they maybe lying.
