About
the Dispatchers
The CCC employs 4 full-time dispatchers and 4 part-time dispatchers who are all highly trained in emergency call-taking and dispatching. Three of the Canfield police officers are also cross-trained as dispatchers. One dispatcher staffs the CCC on each shift, however, two dispatchers are scheduled during busy times (i.e. Monday through Friday, 4th of July, Canfield Fair and OVI checkpoints).
New dispatchers must complete a 40-hour Basic Telecommunicator course and other courses, such as: Law Enforcement Dispatch, Fire Service Dispatch, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Domestic Violence call-taking, Stress Identification & Management, Cultural Diversity Awareness, Blood borne Pathogens, CPR, and Telephone Etiquette. Dispatchers are also provided with at least 16 hours of continuing education each year to include such topics as: weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, assertive communication skills, and a variety of dispatch, law enforcement, and fire department topics. In addition, each dispatcher has extra training in their area of expertise, such as: records management, training of new hires, workplace development, ergonomics, statewide/national computer terminal administration, computer software administration, hostage negotiation, emergency medical dispatch quality assurance, crime analysis, and emergency medical technology. Each dispatcher is a State of Ohio Notary and a Deputy Clerk of Canfield Mayor’s Court and Mahoning County Court.
